Bucs fall to St. Pete
February 17, 2017

Florida SouthWestern State erased a 15-point first-half deficit, but lost at St. Petersburg 73-70 Wednesday night in an important Suncoast Conference matchup.

With the loss, the Buccaneers (22-6. 8-2 conference) fall into a tie with St. Pete at the top of the Suncoast Conference standings, but the Titans own the head-to-head tie-breaker by winning two of three matchups with the Bucs this season. Two regular season games remain and the Bucs need to win out and hope for a St. Pete loss in order to walk away with the Conference title.

Tyler Cheese led the Bucs with 14 points, Anthony Murphy recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nych Smith knocked down huge free-throws down the stretch to tie the game and finished with 10 points and six assists.

The Bucs travel to Winter Haven Saaturday to battle Polk State.

Softball: From a beach-lined campus to a beach-lined resort, FGCU's softball team is traveling south of the border to compete in the Puerto Vallarta Challenge. Off to their second 4-0 start to a season in program history, the Eagles face two 2016 NCAA Tournament teams, one of which currently ranks in the Top 25.

The Eagles play games Thursday and Friday against No. 21 Fresno State, against Cal State Fullerton Friday, Texas Tech on Thursday and Mississippi State on Saturday.

FGCU started 4-0 for just the second time in the program's 15 years. The Eagles started 5-0-1 in 2014.

The Eagles defeated LIU-Brooklyn four times and scored 32 runs in a pair of doubleheaders last weekend.
