S.E. 47th Terrace open for business

Progress is often painful. And it is never more painful than when the project everybody has been hoping for begins - literally - outside the front door of your home or business.

As homeowners, we may well see the benefit of city water and sewer expanding into our neighborhood.

As business owners, we may see the benefit of adding lanes out front for a street that is bumper-to-bumper past capacity.

But when the detour signs go up and the 'dozers come in, it's well, hell.

For what can feel like an eternity.

The South Cape businesses along Southeast 47th Terrace where the $13.5 million Screetscape project is under way are currently feeling that pain.

It's not that they don't want, or understand, the benefit of the project that will replace antiquated water and sewer infrastructure while adding much wider sidewalks, new landscaping and other improvements.

It's keeping their doors open and their employees paid while the project moves towards its anticipated year-end completion.

For open their doors are.

As disruptive as the construction work may appear for those of us doing a drive-by, the restaurants, shops, stores and other businesses along Southeast 47th Terrace are open.

And they want to stay that way long enough to take advantage of the project designed to improve and enhance Cape Coral's budding Entertainment District by boosting both "walkability" and curb appeal from Coronado Parkway to Southeast 15th Avenue.

The city and the construction manager, Chris-Tel Construction, have committed to two things: Providing businesses support and traffic advisories for the public.

To that end the city has created a fast-track application process for businesses to apply for and display banner signs while construction is under way.

We urge you to look for them; you might even discover a business or eatery you haven't tried.

To help you get there, traffic updates may be found at se47terrace.com/traffic-advisories/ .

This week, the website advises that construction crews are working on underground utility improvements and tie-ins at Southeast 47th Terrace and 8th Court. That intersection will be closed for approximately two weeks, "weather permitting, to complete the infrastructure improvements."

The advisory also states: "Businesses are open in the blocks from Coronado Parkway to 8th Court and from 8th Court to 9th Place. Customers can access those businesses via SE 47th Terrace from Coronado Parkway for those located from Coronado Parkway to 8th Court, and from 9th Place for businesses located from 8th Court to 9th Place."

It's a little complicated but it's good info and the website includes a map.

We invite you to check out se47terrace.com/traffic-advisories/ .

And we urge you to continue to support the affected South Cape businesses while the Streetscape project is under way.

Many of the owners and their employees live here; they are our neighbors.

They all certainly pay taxes here; they contribute to our community.

We'd like to see them all at the project-completed ribbon cutting as the year wraps up.

We're sure they would appreciate the support from our community to see that they are able to make the event.
