To the editor:

The annual Pride and Patriotism program will convene on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. at Barbara Mann Performing Arts Center. The event will be the 15th year in which the Pride and Patriotism Committee, a voluntary committee of veterans, teachers and patriotic citizens, has honored students in Grades K-12 for submitting drawings, poems and DVDs, highlighting soldiers, veterans and America. The winners are taken to Barbara B. Mann Hall and presented with gold, silver and bronze medals, for their excellence, in a manner reminiscent of the Olympics. Veterans and the students' teachers are all involved in the presentation, which instills a sense of patriotism in the students.

In between presentations of the various grade level awards, patriotic music is played, choruses sing and the Junior ROTC presents a solemn ceremony entitled the "Missing Man Memorial." Each veteran in the audience is honored as the theme from their military division is played (Marine Corp Hymn, Air Force Blue, etc. The gala evening is also very sentimental and maudlin in nature, as the themes and music evokes memories of all the various wars and excursions.

This year's theme for the program will be a long overdue recognition of "Women in the Military" and those women supporting the war effort, such as Rosie the Riveter.

Please join us in this extraordinary evening of patriotism and celebration of the U.S.A., the country that has given us so much. Veterans Day is a perfect day for sharing these honors. Thank you in anticipation!
