North boys finish third in state bowling tournament

The North Fort Myers boys bowling team finished third in the FHSAA state tournament which wrapped up Thursday in Orlando.

North, coming into the tournament as the 14th seed, drove into the semifinals with a great run on Wednesday.

On Thursday, William Dwyer defeated the Red Knights 3-1, dropping North into the consolation bracket. Apopka emerged from that bracket, defeated North Fort Myers and reached the final before Dwyer won the title.

The Red Knights' unified team, meanwhile, came home with a state championship.

Island Coast was eliminated from the girls championship with a consolation bracket loss to Circle Christian.

Oviedo was the girls state champion, defeating Space Coast in the final.

Boys soccer

Mariner: Tritons senior soccer player Leo Perez will sign a letter of intent to play for the United States Naval Academy in a ceremony at the school Wednesday, Nov. 13. The signing will be held at 1 p.m. in the school's auditorium. Perez, who will be working his way toward becoming a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, was Florida's Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year this past season.

Thursday

Preseason results: In the Fort Myers Preseason Classic, Mariner picked up two more wins Thursday to go 4-0 for the tournament. Esteban Orjuela had the only goal in a 1-0 victory against Port Charlotte, while Orjuela and Leo Perez scored in 2-0 win against East Lee County.
